WRU Crew 10 Year

On July 17th, WRU Crew hosted their 520th consecutive Monday Night Run - 10 years running in the heart of Washington Heights. Hector Espinal and Josh Mock, co-founders of WRU, have created an incredible community of individuals who uplift us all by to celebrating running, celebrating their Uptown neighborhood, and celebrating the culture. Congrats to this crew for an incredible milestone.

I joined up for their 5K to document and show support to community.

The arrivals at these events is just as important as the running itself. NYC geography can isolate certain crew, and we use this time to catch up on running and life. Also, it’s nice to just see good people.

Once the red megaphone comes out, it’s time to get started. Some announcements and of course, responsible stretching and warm ups.

I never forget that we are the people the next generation is looking up to. Hec leads by example.

Time to run. The group is massive - I think it was close to 300 people total.

Running connects us.

It wouldn’t be uptown without running through a fire hydrant.

One thing you’ll notice about Washington Heights, it’s hilly.

I’ve always appreciated how WRU stops and waits for all runners mid-run.

Community.

We made our way to the WRU billboard. I made sure we got everyone in the photo, shoutout to Steve | Crossinguard_Ninja for making sure I didn’t fall off the parking meter taking this.

Folks then started to pick up the pace as we took over Broadway.

A brief interlude for an important tradition.
